Too much humidity is not good
2009-12-16
In your apartment, a certain level of humidity contributes to your well-being and prevents your skin, throat and nostrils from drying. On a hygrometer, the perfect humidity level oscillates between 30 and 50 %. During the winter, the level should be below 45 % and even below 30 % when the temperature turns very cold.
A humidity level that is too high can be harmful. It can lead to oxidation, mould, rot, bad odours and condensation. It also contributes to the proliferation of mites. Mould can affect the health of pregnant women, young children and the elderly.

If you don’t have a hygrometer, the condensation that appears on your windows should be a sign that cooking, baths, the cleaning of your floors or the drying of your clothes have exceeded the humidity level in your apartment. For your well-being, you should:
- activate the bathroom fan after each shower or bath;
- activate the kitchen fan to evacuate steam or smoke when you are cooking;
- avoid hanging wet clothes;
- ventilate on a regular basis, even during the winter;
- clear the baseboard heaters to allow hot air to flow.
Don’t wait until the condensation in your windows turns into frost or mould.
