Institutional and commercial buildings
Over time, the SHDM has acquired, renovated, or built several properties with institutional and commercial purposes.
Please consult the list below to discover some of our institutional and commercial spaces and offices.
The Îlot Balmoral project, located northwest of the Place des Festivals, houses the headquarters and studios of the National Film Board (NFB) of Canada, as well as the School of Digital Arts, Animation, and Design (NAD School) of the UQAC. Located at 801 Brennan Street in the Ville-Marie borough, the Louis-Charland building has a LEED CI certification. It houses four municipal services, totalling approximately 1,400 employees, who were previously divided up in twelve different buildings.
The Chaussegros-de-Léry building is a multifunctional complex built in 1991. Adjacent to City Hall, it includes 135 condominiums, 225,000 ft2 of municipal offices, 40,000 ft2 of commercial space and an indoor parking lot of 1,165 spaces that are used by the building’s occupants and residents, and by workers from the surrounding area. The garage is also equipped with electric vehicle charging stations.
In 2015, the SHDM undertook important work at the Centre Jean-Marie-Gauvreau, located at 911, Jean-Talon Street East, in order to house the new Maison de la culture Calude Léveillée, a cultural storefront that includes an auditorium and exhibition spaces.
Built between 1847 and 1903, the Monastère du Bon-Pasteur was extensively renovated in 1980 in order to convert it into a multi-purpose complex. The project led to the creation of a housing cooperative, a residence for seniors, a residential complex, a cultural center, a daycare, and office spaces. The City of Montreal owns the site, but the SHDM holds an emphyteutic lease for the Chapel and the Maison de la Culture.
On May 25, 2023, a fire severely damaged this building. The SHDM then coordinated the safeguarding and securing of the building to protect and salvage everything possible. The building is now protected and secured to prevent further deterioration: it is weatherproof (temporary roof), heated, ventilated, secured, equipped with sprinklers, and monitored.
On the ground floor of several of its buildings, the SHDM has areas that are perfect for shops or to offer services to the public. Many of these businesses enjoy an on-site customer base with residents or employees occupying the upper floors.
