Government financial programs for rent

Two government programs, summarized below, can help low-income tenants pay their rent. To find out if you are eligible, you must contact the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and/or Revenu Québec.

  •   Improvements to the SHQ Shelter Allowance program>
    If eligible, families or individuals aged 50 and over who spend a significant portion of their budget on rent may receive an allowance of up to $170 per month.

  •   One-time top-up to the Canada Housing Benefit
    If the amount you pay for rent and your income qualify, you may be eligible for a one-time tax-free payment of $500.
    The deadline to apply is March 31, 2023
