« Originally trained as a marine engine mechanic, I found myself needing to explore a new career path due to a lack of opportunities in the field. That's when I discovered building operations and maintenance, a role I learned on the job and quickly grew passionate about. After working in both office and residential buildings, I joined Marché Bonsecours, where I spent eight years when the building was owned by the Société de développement de Montréal (SDM). Following the merger and the creation of the SHDM, my career naturally continued within the organization's residential real estate portfolio. Today, I have been working as a Building Attendant for nearly twenty years, primarily at the Autonomie+ Louis-Parent building and the Pour tous buildings on Saint-Laurent and Francis streets. What I enjoy most about this profession is the connection with people. Customer service has always been at the heart of my work, and I have always viewed my role as one of supporting tenants with respect, kindness, and understanding. Every day brings something different, and the variety of responsibilities, combined with the autonomy to organize my work, has kept me engaged throughout the years. As retirement approached, passing on knowledge to the next generation became especially important to me. The role of a Building Attendant spans many areas, including carpentry, plumbing, electrical work, locksmithing, and maintenance, and most of these skills are learned through hands-on experience. Over time, we develop practical instincts and effective ways of working that can be shared with new employees to help ensure continuity of service. For that reason, I have often taken part in training newly hired Building Attendants. After all these years, I am proud of the path I have taken and grateful for the opportunity to contribute to both the organization and its tenants. Being able to share my experience and knowledge with new employees, both technically and personally, is a rewarding way to help prepare the next generation. »
« A team at the heart of operations "In my view, the procurement team is a true operational pillar of the SHDM. It ensures project continuity by managing contract awards and relying on efficient processes to meet deadlines, which is especially critical for the delivery of our real estate projects. The team also helps maintain budgets by encouraging competition and optimizing costs, while strictly adhering to applicable laws and regulations. In 2024, we awarded 102 contracts, a significant increase compared to 65 in 2023. With all team positions now filled, we were able to stabilize operations, innovate, and optimize our tools to become even more efficient. Thanks to a team with diverse expertise, we are well-positioned to continue progressing and achieve the objectives of the 2025–2028 strategic plan. « Being present and attentive Since joining the SHDM in April 2024, I now manage nearly 800 rental units. My role as a property manager involves supporting our tenants in a wide range of situations, including during significant transitions. This was the case when we took over the management of 138 units previously managed by Habitations Terrasse Saint-Michel (HTSM), as well as during the acquisition of the La Pépinière buildings. Our main challenge, as a new manager or new owner, is to ensure a smooth transition while building a relationship of trust with tenants. It is essential to focus on a positive tenant experience, being present, attentive, and available, as these changes often represent major milestones for them. Beyond official written communications, we also organize informational meetings in the buildings, with participation from representatives of various SHDM departments. These special moments allow us to answer tenants’ questions, reassure them, and help them better understand our mission. Both transitions, related to the management takeover and the acquisitions, went smoothly thanks to the dedication of our internal team: agile, experienced, and capable of adapting quickly to change. »
