Charter of the French language

Charter of the French language 

The SHDM, as an administration, must adhere to the 'la Loi sur la langue officielle et commune du Québec, le français', which amends the Charter of the French language, the regulations stemming from it, and the 'Politique linguistique de l'État'.

The administration (Quebec ministries and government agencies, public organizations) must set an example in the use, promotion, protection, and promotion of the French language in Quebec. As a paramunicipal organization, the SHDM must comply with this regulation.

Even when the Charter of the French Language allows it, the use of a language other than French should only occur when it is strictly impossible to proceed differently.

SHDM employees will communicate with you in French and inquire whether you are covered by an exception when you call or visit the reception. 

Exceptions 

According to the regulations, we can communicate with you in English only if you are an individual and:

  • we were already communicating with you in English before May 13, 2021 (you have a "grandfathered" right);
  • you are declared eligible to receive education in English in Quebec;
  • you are Indigenous;
  • you are an immigrant who arrived in Quebec within the last six months;
  • you do not reside in Quebec.

We can also communicate with you in English in the following situations:

  • you are acting on behalf of a person who falls under one of the exceptions mentioned above;
  • you represent a company, partnership, or organization located either outside Quebec or solely on a reserve;
  • when health or safety requires it.
