The Société d’habitation et de développement de Montréal (SHDM) today announced the acquisition of the Edifice Jean-Brillant, located at 3055 rue Delisle, a 124-unit affordable housing property in the Saint-Henri sector of the Sud-Ouest Borough. The non-profit organization Maison Biéler Inc. is transferring to the SHDM the emphyteutic lease it has held since the building was constructed in 1982 and which will expire in 2034.

« We are very proud of the acquisition of the Édifice Jean-Brillant, which represents an opportunity to ensure the sustainability of these 124 affordable housing units intended for an elderly and independent clientele in Saint-Henri, » stated Nancy Shoiry, Executive Director of the SHDM. « This transaction is perfectly in line with the objective identified in our 2017-2020 strategic planning to increase our affordable rental housing inventory. »

The SHDM wishes to inform you that the Société d’habitation Québec (SHQ) has set up a financial assistance program for tenants to pay their rent in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic. The purpose of this program is to temporarily support tenants who do not have enough cash to pay their May and/or June rent, in whole or in part, due to the loss of their job, stoppage of work or reduction in the number of hours worked in connection with the COVID-19 pandemic.

This program applies to the entire territory of Québec, with the exception of Indian reserves. It allows tenants to take out an interest-free loan for a maximum fixed amount of $1,500, enabling them to pay their May and/or June 2020 rent, in whole or in part.

The financial assistance is paid directly to landlords.

At the present time, we are all facing extraordinary circumstances that are beyond our control. We are aware of the challenges that we face individually and collectively to ensure everyone’s health and safety.

In view of the Government’s announcement of the payment of Employment Insurance around April 6, we wish to inform you that the SHDM will show understanding for late rent payments.

In our collective effort to minimize the risks of spreading COVID-19, we advise you to make payments online or by pre-authorized withdrawals (direct debits). If you are unable to do so, we advise you to make payments by cheque to be sent to us at our Place Dupuis offices at 800 boulevard De Maisonneuve Est, Suite 2200, Montréal, Québec H2L 4L8.

Like all organizations, the SHDM is closely monitoring the developments of the Coronavirus in order to adapt our decisions to government guidelines and best prevention practices. The health and safety of our clients and employees is a top priority.

With our prevention objective in mind, we have increased the frequency of maintenance in the common areas of our buildings. We have implemented other measures in our Autonomies + buildings that accommodate people over the age of 55 by closing community rooms and asking tenants to limit visits.

In addition, in order to limit the risks of spreading the virus and to protect our clients and employees, we have decided to give priority to contacts by telephone. For this purpose, we have temporarily closed the SHDM main office reception desk (800 de Maisonneuve East) and the Notre-Dame-de-Grâce and Côte-des-Neiges offices.

In the coming days, and with the same objective in mind, we will handle only urgent or essential requests for service.

The Société d’habitation et de développement de Montréal (SHDM) announced today the sale of its property located at 1685, 1687, 1689, 1691 and 1693, avenue de l’Église, in the Sud-Ouest Borough, to the Habitat for Humanity Québec charitable organization.

In the summer of 2019, the SHDM launched a public call for proposals to community organizations in order to sell the vacant building on avenue de l’Église. The objective was to preserve the affordable housing mission of this 3-storey building, particularly since such housing is in short supply in Montreal.

« The SHDM is delighted with this new partnership with Habitat for Humanity Québec. This sale will become an inspiring project that will provide five families with reasonable access to home ownership, » stated Nancy Shoiry, Managing Director of the SHDM.

Habitat for Humanity Québec’s mission is to mobilize volunteers and donors in order to build affordable properties and promote the purchase of a home as a means of ending the cycle of poverty, » explained Clévis Cabrera of Habitat for Humanity Québec. “The acquisition of the building owned by the SHDM will enable us to pursue this mission by offering low-income Québec families genuine access to home ownership. »
